“A spiritual gift is given to each of us…” (1 Corinthians 12:7)
Every believer has been given a spiritual gift. Pretty amazing, huh? 1 Corinthians 12 goes on to compare the church to a body- we have many parts, but those parts make up one organism. One part can’t say to another, “I don’t need you.” God equips us at salvation to contribute to the body of Christ in a unique way. You have a gift! It is the Spirit who distributes gifts, and he decides which gift each person receives.
“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service…” (1 Corinthians 12:4-5)
The scriptures affirm that there are many different kinds of gifts. Some people have the gift of wisdom, administration, faith, leadership, discernment or encouragement. Some are apostles, prophets, teachers, evangelists or pastors. Even though the gifts are different, it’s the same Spirit who is the source of them all. Different gifts lead to different types of service.
“…but we serve the same Lord. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.” (1 Corinthians 12:5,7)
Though the gifts are different, they are given for the same purpose- to serve Jesus and help one another. Our gifts are given to advance the kingdom and complete the good works God has prepared in advance for us to do. They are also given for the mutual care of one another.
